OUR HISTORY
2007
Ian Jones founds the firm as a sole practitioner. After his time as a Partner and Head of Employment Law and Litigation with larger firms, he felt there was a better way to do things. He establishes Spencer Shaw to offer exceptional service, excellent communication and to make the process simple for clients.
2016
After meeting Ian at a networking event and working together, Neal Atwell joins as a Director to focus on growing the business. Neal, a former Chief Inspector, retrained as a Business Consultant.
2017
We hire our first employee, Tashoi Reid, who is still with us. Tash joins us as a Legal Assistant to offer clients excellent support on a cost-efficient basis.

Ian is determined to offer flexibility in order to appeal to lawyers with families and commitments outside of work. He intends for spencer Shaw to avoid the long hours and high stress of typical law firms.
2018
We are ranked on 3 Best Rated as one of the top three employment law firms in Birmingham. We have stayed there ever since. We also began building strong links with local charities including Edward’s Trust.
2019
As the legal team grows, so does the support team. We hire Laura Rollason as a Business Development Officer to continue the business growth.
2020
We complete Lexcel accreditation to ensure our internal processes were to a high standard. Spencer Shaw Solicitors was found to have ‘notably exceeded the basic requirements’ in all seven areas assessed: structure and strategy, financial management, information management, people management, risk management, client care, and file and case management. Feedback from the Law Society showed no major or minor non-compliances, and no areas for improvement. We remained accredited until 2025 when we opted not to renew, feeling that we had learned what we needed to and our processes were fully entrenched.
2021
Having outgrown our office on the Hagley Road, we move into our new home in Harborne.

Ian celebrates 30 years since he qualified as a solicitor. We continue to grow the team, recruiting Nazia Khan.
2022
The firm celebrates its 15-year anniversary.

Ian takes on his first big fundraising challenge for Edward’s Trust. He joins a team from Dains Accountants to hike 100km around the Peak District, which he completes in 24 hours.
2023
This year marks our first time being finalists for legal awards, and we start strong. The firm is shortlisted for Birmingham Law Society Law Firm of the Year (up to 5 partners), the Modern Law Award for Client Care (1-25 employees), the Lexis Nexis Award for Customer Focus and Legal Business Boutique Law Firm of the Year. Ian is also a finalist for Birmingham Law Society’s Partner of the Year.

Our Senior Litigation Assistant Sukhii Garcha and Legal Cashier Holly Ashworth join the team.
2024
We win our first award - the Modern Law Award for Client Care (1-25 employees). This prestigious national award celebrates small firms that exceed expectations of client care and take an innovative approach to service. The judging panel was chaired by the President of the Law Society, Nick Emmerson, and included legal experts from The Law Society Gazette, Durham Law School, HSBC, Meta and Which?

Ian joins board of Birmingham Law Society to help shape the future of the society, represent members’ interests and uphold the value of the society.

Nazia celebrates 20 years since she qualified as a solicitor.
2025
We win Birmingham Law Society Law Firm of the Year (1-49 employees). The judges were impressed by our customer service and our commitment to creating a great working environment for our team.

Neal retires from operational duties, but remains with the firm as a Non-Executive Director. Laura is promoted to Practice Manager and takes on some of Neal’s responsibilities.
2026
We welcome Associate Solicitor Chena Dzikira and Business Support Assistant Bismah Mumtaz.

Ian celebrates 35 years as a qualified solicitor.

Laura joins the board of Harborne Village Business Improvement District, to help make the local area a great place to visit, work and do business.
