REMOTE EMPLOYMENT LAW ADVICE

We find that many clients prefer remote advice in the comfort of their own home or office, without the time and cost of travel. This opens up a much wider choice of solicitors across the country so that you can choose the most suitable firm for you, not just the nearest.

From the start of our firm, we have always been a hybrid organisation. Remote work and flexibility are built into our ways of working. (This was particularly helpful in 2020, as we were able to smoothly transition to fully online without disruption to our clients!)

Are you considering remote legal advice? Here are some of the key things you need to know.

DOES MY SOLICITOR NEED TO BE NEARBY?

Now that most things are done online, there is no need for a local solicitor. Exchanging documents, identity checks and even signatures can now be done digitally. Some people prefer the reassurance of knowing that they can visit their solicitor’s office if needed. Other than this, there is no need for a local solicitor.

HOW WILL I SIGN DOCUMENTS WHEN WORKING REMOTELY?

We use a digital system called e-Sign for signatures. You will receive a link to your document by email. You will be able to sign the document by writing or typing your name, but only if you access it via this link. The programme collects enough data to be secure and legally binding.

DO YOU STILL OFER IN PERSON SERVICES?

Yes, we also offer in-person advice in our office in Harborne, Birmingham. However, as not all our solicitors work from this office, working remotely gives you a wider choice of representatives.

DO YOU USE VIDEO MEETINGS OR PHONECALLS?

We use both video meetings and phone calls, depending on the circumstances and your preferences.

WHAT IF I'M NOT GOOD WITH TECHNOLOGY?

It is unavoidable that remote advice requires some use of technology. We can get around some things - for example, you don't need to be an expert with video calls, we'll just use the phone.

You will need to be able to email us documents and complete e-signatures. Our friendly assistants are always happy to help by talking you through the process on the phone. But if you think you'll need to bring physical documents to the office, or sign paper documents in person, you might feel more comfortable with a local solicitor.

WILL MY SOLICITOR TRAVEL TO MY TRIBUNAL HEARING?

The tribunal process is now managed mostly online. There is a digital system for submitting claims, and far more hearings are held virtually. In person hearings are still a possibility, and the tribunal will decide whether the hearing is online or in person. But in our experience, the tribunal service seems keen to handle hearings online. It is unlikely (although still possible) that your solicitor will need to travel to your hearing.
