Oliver joined the team in June 2019 as a paralegal, working on both Debt Litigation and Employment Law matters.
What was your background before joining Spencer Shaw?
Since obtaining my Law Degree from The University of Birmingham and LPC from the University of Law, I have worked at a firm specialising in Clinical Negligence, a High Court Enforcement Office and as a Commercial Paralegal in the digital advertising industry. I have also volunteered in my local community, assisting vulnerable people in need of support and rehabilitation.

What is your role at Spencer Shaw?
I work as a paralegal, assisting the Principal Solicitor and fee earners. I engage with clients, often as their first contact when they make an enquiry and when they visit us. I gather information to help build a picture of their requirements and needs. My role requires me to obtain the latest authorities on legal issues and prepare research documents. Having had previous experience in debt recovery, I hope to assist in expanding this part of the business too.

What about the job are you most passionate about?
Engaging with the clients and assisting to bring their matter to a good conclusion. Employment law allows me to utilise inter-personal skills that some more commercial areas of law do not necessarily require. When people have an employment issue, whether they are employers or employees, it has a huge effect - it can affect their livelihood or sense of identity. Similarly, a lot of the businesses we help with debt recovery are smaller businesses, and so being owed money can be stressful and again impact on their livelihood. It is so important that clients are treated with kindness and professionalism when facing those issues.

What is a typical day in your role?
My day can vary quite substantially. I can be speaking to prospective clients, reviewing and organising client documents, preparing bundles for trial or talking to barristers’ chambers. My main duty is to be of assistance to the fee earners.

What do you think makes Spencer Shaw a great firm?
Everybody acts with a very high level of professionalism. We are constantly looking for new and better ways of working, whether that be by technology or new techniques.

What makes Spencer Shaw a great workplace?
Although timescales imposed in litigation matters can have the capacity to cause stress, the team employs a calm demeanour for maximum effectiveness. Nothing is ever achieved through stress or disorganisation.

What advice would you give to somebody who wants to get into this area of work?
You have to be an empathetic person and be extremely flexible with clients who may be working to tight deadlines themselves. And make notes of everything!

Tell us something about you outside of work?
I enjoy painting, particularly in an abstract style. I am also a big fan of visiting museums, particularly if there is a wing of Ancient Egyptian artefacts and mummies - I have been obsessed with the Ancient Egyptians since I was small.
