This week our team had training about neurodiversity.
Better awareness and diagnosis has lead to a rise in disputes about discrimination. In 2023, 102 discrimination cases concerned neurodivergence. It’s a trend we’ve seen among our clients too, and we’ve already represented several clients with ADHD and dyslexia. As approximately 15-20% of the population are neurodiverse, this is likely to be an issue for many workplaces.

So we decided it was time to get a better understanding.

Petra from Enabling Technology kindly came to speak to us about the conditions that fall under the umbrella of neurodiversity – including ADHD, dyslexia, autism, dyscalculia and dyspraxia. We learned about the associated strengths and challenges, what businesses can do to support neurodivergent workers and the common mistakes they see employers make.

This will help our team to spot when employees may be facing discrimination, and when employers are at risk of discriminating. We are better able to advise employers about the adjustments to offer and advise employees whether their employer has made suitable adjustments.

Our Legal Assistants, who are often the first contact clients have with our firm, will have a deeper understanding of how to tailor their service where needed.

Sukhii said “It was nice to see the strengths of neurodiverse people being highlighted rather than focusing primarily on the challenges they face. I can use this training to tailor my style and meet clients' needs. I will be able to communicate in a manner which helps the client process the information.”

Neal said “The training was very valuable as an employment firm, to help our clients, but also as an employer. I learned a lot and can see that it can make our firm an even better employer.”

We are also better placed to spot when a client could benefit from Enabling Technology’s support, which includes:

training
equipment and software (as well as help to implement them)
strategies (such as time management and memory techniques)
consultancy to help employers understand their options
specialist advice during mediation or tribunals
