Employment in Nottingham
Nottingham is one of the UKs’ six ‘Science Cities’, intended to link business and science, and to help the economy grow through science, technology and innovation. The UKs largest bioscience innovation centre, BioCity, was founded as a joint venture between two of the city’s universities, Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham. It houses around 80 science-based companies.
Nottingham City Council’s strategy for developing the city’s economy includes focusses on digital media, low-carbon technologies, life sciences, retail, leisure and financial and business services.
In 2014-25, more businesses were started in Nottingham than any other UK city. Nottingham was also ranked in the top ten UK cities for job growth from 2004 to 2013.
Nottingham’s two universities are attended by over 60,000 students, providing a stream of new talent for local businesses.
