CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Charity

We support Edward's Trust, a child bereavement charity based in Edgbaston. Founded in 1989, Edward's Trust provides family bereavement services across the West Midlands. The charity offers:

support for parents who are bereaved or about to be bereaved of a son or daughter, whatever their age.
support for children and young people who are bereaved or about to be bereaved of a parent, sibling or carer.
a ‘Wellbeing in Bereavement’ service for bereaved parents and carers, including respite bereavement care and complementary therapies.
training and consultation for professionals working with families who are bereaved or about to be bereaved.
Spencer Shaw Solicitors provides funding for one counselling session each month as well as organising, volunteering at and taking part in fundraising events. When making online business purchases, we use EasyFundraising to generate extra donations.
We also occasionally fundraise for, or donate to, other charities close to our hearts. Read more about our fundraising and charity support below

The Environment

We have taken steps to become ‘greener’ and reduce our impact on the environment. This includes being paper free as much as possible, using digital communications and storage wherever legally permitted. We securely dispose of necessary confidential waste with The Hill Company, which is accredited for Environmental and Security standards.
We reduce unnecessary travel by offering remote advice to clients, and home working to staff where suitable. Our office has recycling stations for food, plastic and paper waste.

We use Smart Pension for our pensions, which invests over 70% of its funds in companies with strong environmental, social and governance credentials.

The Local Community

As an SME ourselves we are keen to support independent businesses and prioritise local businesses and SMEs as suppliers where possible. We are proud to use local businesses for our office supplies, IT, accounting, design, branding, printing, signage, website, and videography. We also make an effort to support the Harborne community. This includes using local independent venues and caterers for away days and social events.

Giving back professionally

Members of our team often use their experience to help others. Andrea and Ian regularly volunteer for the Employment Tribunal Litigants in Person Support (ELIPS) scheme, run by the Employment Lawyers Association. They offer one-off advice sessions to claimants who are representing themselves at upcoming hearings. Andrea has received the ELIPS silver volunteer award for volunteering a total of 24 hours to the scheme so far.

Laura supports the careers and mentoring departments at local universities, to support students as they start their careers after studying. This has involved mentoring other first generation students and speaking at events about alternative careers in law.
