CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Charity

Our main chosen charity is Edward's Trust, a child bereavement charity based in Edgbaston. Founded in 1989, Edward's Trust provides family bereavement services across the West Midlands. The charity offers:

support for parents who are bereaved or about to be bereaved of a son or daughter, whatever their age.
support for children and young people who are bereaved or about to be bereaved of a parent, sibling or carer.
a ‘Wellbeing in Bereavement’ service for bereaved parents and carers, including respite bereavement care and complementary therapies.
training and consultation for professionals working with families who are bereaved or about to be bereaved.
Spencer Shaw Solicitors provides funding for one counselling session each month as well as organising, volunteering at and taking part in fundraising events.
We also occasionally fundraise for, or donate to, other charities close to our hearts. Read more about our fundraising and charity support below

The Environment

We have taken steps to become ‘greener’ and reduce our impact on the environment. This includes being paper free as much as possible, using digital communications and storage wherever legally permitted.

We securely dispose of necessary confidential waste with Right Lets Shred. Right Lets Shred is is based locally in Smetwick, cutting the emissions involved in transporting waste. All waste is recycled in the UK, mostly to make toilet paper. Our office has recycling stations for food, plastic and paper waste.
We reduce unnecessary travel by offering remote advice to clients, and home working to staff where suitable. We use local businesses and suppliers, which reduces the carbon footprint of any in-person meetings or services.

When updating our office, we offered old office furniture as free for collection, allowing products to be reused and benefitting local people.

We use Smart Pension for our pensions, which invests over 70% of its funds in companies with strong environmental, social and governance credentials.

The Local Community

Our Practice Manager sits on the board of Harborne Village Business Improvement District (BID). The BID provides services that add value above and beyond council services, with the ultimate aim of making Harborne a great place to work, shop and do business. In particular, Laura will represent the interests of professional service firms in the area.
As an SME ourselves we are keen to support independent businesses and prioritise local businesses and SMEs as suppliers where possible. We are proud to use local businesses for our office supplies, IT, accounting, design, branding, printing, signage, website, videography and PAT testing. We also make an effort to support the Harborne community. This includes using local independent venues and caterers for away days, networking meetings and social events

Giving back professionally

Our Business Development Manager supports the careers and mentoring departments at local universities to support students as they start their careers after studying. This has involved mentoring other first generation students and speaking about transferrable skills and alternative careers in law.
