Train strikes - do people who miss work have to be paid?

Train strikes are set to continue into the New Year as companies and employees struggle to reach an agreement.

This could have a knock-on effect on people who use trains to travel to work, and the businesses that employ them. If employees can't get to work, must employers still pay them?
